Scarborough’s population grew by 2.4% between 2001 and 2006, compared with 0.9% for the City as a whole.
Scarborough’s population reached 602,575 in 2006. The population of Scarborough reflects the great wave of immigration
over the past 25 years. Two thirds of the population is visible minorities, compared with 40% for the rest of the City.
Following English (58%), the top 3 languages spoken in Scarborough Community Council area homes in 2006 were:
Chinese (6.4% i.e.38,564), Cantonese (6.3% i.e. 37,962) and Tamil (5.9% i.e. 35,552). Mandarin speaking people started
coming to attend Toronto Simpson Chinese Alliance Church around 2001. Due to limited resources and support, TSCAC
gathered the Mandarin people to form a small group. TSCAC provided evangelistic Sunday school and shared gatherings.
Due to language limitation, the Mandarin people had difficulty joining the Cantonese Sunday Worship. Mandarin Worship
at other churches in the neighbourhood was not the preference for the Mandarin speaking people who preferred TSCAC
regular small group gatherings.

…Peter Yen.
Peter started his service at Toronto Simpson Chinese Alliance Church in 2007 as a student intern. He was placed under the supervision of the senior Pastor. During Peter’s internship with TSCAC, we found Peter an enthusiastic evangelist who would take every opportunity to share the gospel with others. Peter is experienced in teaching Sunday School, he loves to preach the word of the Lord, and His love for God is notable.
Although he came from Taiwan, Peter is called to serve the Mainland Chinese. During his service in the past 2 years, Peter has demonstrated diligence and faithfulness, and is well received by the Mandarin congregation and co-workers in the ministry.
