La Fuente
It may be difficult as Canadians to imagine a city whose population exceeds that of our entire country, but that is the reality in Mexico City today. One only needs to look out at the unending sea of buildings and lights to understand the magnitude of people who live there: most of whom have never experienced a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The goal of La Fuente, the fountain, is to build relationships and disciple Mexican people, connecting them to an authentic community of faith. Centered in the district of Coyoacán, where the universities and cafés draw people from across the country, la Fuente is perfectly situated to impact Mexico. It seeks to be the fountain of living water, the source of hope, to people who are spiritually dry.
Despite the geographical distance, the connection that many ECD churches have to La Fuente is strong. Since 2003, well over 100 students, pastors and young adults from churches across the district have travelled to Mexico City as part of a short-term mission project called FUSION. This project unites young people of two different cultures through English language conversation. The learning and sharing fuses our different cultures and develops lasting friendships. When this partnership between ECD churches and our missionaries in Mexico began, there was no church. There was only a vision and a prayer. Year after year, step by step, a new faith community under the leadership of Jonathan Mikes and his team began to emerge. Across the miles, churches here helped to birth a church there. La Fuente stands as an example of what global community can look like.
Today La Fuente has a visible presence in Coyoacán and has dozens of committed, discipled Mexican people at its core. As a church, La Fuente is committed to serving the community where it is situated, holding various outreach events, alpha courses and discipleship classes. These outreach events are now drawing more than 100 people. It also has a significant ministry to the Otomi people, a marginalized, aboriginal group who come to the city to sell their handcrafts.
