Hakka Alliance
Introducing the Hakka People....
A hidden and distinct cultural group of an estimated 20,000 people live in the GTA. They are characterized by a specific language of the spectrum of Chinese languages called “Hakka.” This ancient name literally means “the guests among us” because the Hakka have always been a wandering people.
Since June 2007, the leadership team of Scarborough Community Alliance Church, then the English congregation of Scarborough Chinese Alliance, began to gather a core team of Hakka speaking Christians to pray together and plan to start a work among Hakka speaking people in the GTA. On November 3, 2007, after 6 months of prayer, Hakka Family Fellowship was birthed. Our first meeting was blessed with about 68 in attendance, and the number has remained consistent ever since.
Between November 2007 to July 2009, the fellowship met once a month on Saturdays and attained a stable attendance of about 55 under a 6 member core leadership team. In April 2008, 14 people were brought to Christ in an evangelistic outreach, and in January 2009, 7 new believers between the ages of 55 and 80 were baptized.
Despite the difficulty in finding a stable shepherd and church planter for this work, the Lord has blessed it abundantly, and the ministry has now reached the next stage of maturity. With the support of the Eastern Canadian District office, and the District Superintendent, we hope to plant the only Hakka-speaking church in the GTA called the Hakka Alliance Church. The church will continue to remain under the care of Scarborough Community Alliance, along with the support of other partner churches and the ECD until significant stability has been achieved.
