Agape Vietnamese
Our vision is to plant a Vietnamese Church in the northern GTA where Alliance witness among the Vietnamese speaking people and English ministries to second generation Vietnamese that are not yet strong.
Vietnamese immigration to the Greater Toronto Area began as far back as 1975 when those fleeing from the war between North and South Vietnam came to settle in areas of downtown Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton. By the 1980s, internal or “second” migration of Vietnamese people within the GTA had begun and the North York area of the GTA became one of the main areas where Vietnamese people settled. The Alliance responded by planting an initial church in the downtown core and that church planted various churches in North York and other areas of the GTA.
In recent years, another internal migration of Vietnamese people who have settled in the GTA in excess of 30 years have begun northwards and eastwards, particularly towards the Vaughan, Markham, and Unionville areas, and as far north as Newmarket. This migration may be attributed to increased affluence of the first generation of immigrants who are now in their 40s and 50s. Concerns for better housing, better schools for their children, and better neighbourhoods to raise families in have likely been the impetus for this migration. As a result, many families settling into these areas are comprised of first generation immigrants who speak Vietnamese fluently, and a second generation who speak English fluently.
